WHAT: The Great Race is coming to the Stahls Automotive Collection on Friday, June 30. The Great Race is an antique, vintage and collector car competitive speed-controlled endurance road rally on public highways. Vehicles must be model year 1972 or older to participate. Teams of two – a driver and a navigator – follow precise course instructions in a cross-country trip. The course instructions require the competing teams to drive at or below the post speed limits at all times. The use of GPS or computers are not permitted and odometers are covered, relying on the endurance and skill of its driver and navigator. This year’s Great Race will feature 120 automobiles making the trek from Jacksonville, Florida nearly 2,400 miles north to Traverse City, Michigan.
The Great Race vehicles will line the parking lot, alongside other classics from car club participants from across Michigan, starting at 12:20 p.m. as they arrive one by one, providing the public a unique glimpse at these historic and classic vehicles. The event is free to the public and will feature food trucks from El Charros, Marconi’s Pizza and Treat Dreams as well as face painting for kids. Following the event, the museum will be open from 3 – 5 p.m. for attendees to explore the collection’s nearly 100 vintage vehicles, rare music machines and other 20th century automotive memorabilia.
